The Olomouc Zoo was opened to the public in 1956. On an area of 42.5 hectares it breeds 1861 animals in 354 species. It is situated in the forests in the foothills of the Low Jeseník Mountains, close to the regional town of Olomouc, in its local part – Svatý Kopeček and is easily accessible by public transport. Visitors are especially interested in the six pavilions (giraffe, monkey, beast, bat, Manchurian leopard and South American pavilion), but also the joint enclosure of bears and wolves, kangaroo enclosure, marine aquariums and Eurasian safari. For children, there is a playground and a rope centre Lanáček. Close contact with animals is possible for children in the sheep, goat and llama enclosures. The zoo is open all year round.
The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FVL) of the Veterinary University Brno is one of the two faculties of this university. It continues the tradition of the College of Veterinary Medicine, which was founded in 1918. It is the only faculty where veterinary medicine can be studied in the Czech Republic. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine carries out university education, research and professional activities focused mainly on clinical veterinary medicine. The faculty is organised into a dean’s office, sections with individual clinics and institutes, and special-purpose faculty facilities.
